I have stayed at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya four times. Each time the service provided by the staff has been excellent. The hotel has been too with the exception of this last trip. The hotel is in dire need of a remodel and upgrade. Tiles are missing from the pool, fixtures are loose in the bathrooms, a light cover in the pool was attached with a zip tie, there is lots of rust around light fixtures and the pool area, the sheets on the bed were like sandpaper, there was water damage in several areas of the hotel and overall the place is just looking dated and worn down. That being said the grounds were still immaculate and the beach area is beautiful. They are supposedly scheduled for a remodel in 2. That would be a mistake in my opinion. Pool had sand, slippery steps into pool from many guests suntan lotion, buffet food needed a little more spices not too much, tour information not when you check in but when you are planning your trip, maybe have a shuttle to go to town instead of looking for a cab. He ensures that all aspects of your meal are perfect. He also made sure that the rest of the staff is on point. On the other hand, when I went to the front lobby to speak with the manager Esteban about the roaches in our room, his response to me was we are in the jungle, what did you expect. I have been to several hotels in Mexico and NONE had roaches. I expect to see other types of insects at the resort, however roaches was NOT on my list and its unacceptable. They had housekeeping come clean the room and spray raid. They kindly left me the can as if I want to spend my vacation killing roaches. It was absolutely disgusting. I have two children one who hasnt started walking yet and picks up everything off of the floor. I saw roaches in the bathroom around our toothbrushes, baby bottles, bottle cleaner and other baby products. We were eventually moved to the second floor where Esteban assured us that people complain less about roaches on higher levels since roaches live in the grass. I will never come back to this resort. We visited in December 1. We had an initial hiccup with our room, it had a musty smell and right opposite our balcony there was some building work going on at the neighbouring hotel. I brought this to the attention of the reception staff and they moved us to another room on the other side which was perfect The rooms were big and spacious with a free mini bar and optics I would have liked a kettle to be able to make a cup of tea but there was only a coffee machine. The balcony was spacious too.
